Arlington Wildlife Removal Tip of the Month: Is it legal for me to trap a bat?

There are over 1300 species of bats around the world, all very important to maintaining our ecosystem. However, many of these species are endangered, with only 40 known species existing in the United States. Most countries such as the United States, United Kingdom and Canada, have laws stating that it is illegal to kill, possess or injure the creature, and if found guilty of such, fines and/or imprisonment can be incurred. In the United States, not only are bats protected, but their natural habitats and roosting areas are, as well. While there are some species that are not endangered, state and international regulations still apply.

Bats live in large colonies, ranging from 12 to thousands. There are health risks associated with having bats roost in your home and the only method to get rid of them is to use exclusion techniques. You are not allowed to trap them so that you can release them elsewhere. Even if you decided that this is what you need to do in order to get them out of your house or building, bats can easily find their way back to the area. Some States such as the State of Illinois, claims that bats are the number one carrier of the rabies virus. However, this is far from the truth since most bats do not carry the rabies virus, and even if it did, it would be practically dying, seeking refuge in an area where it can quietly dissipate.

Even if some species are not endangered, you risk breaking the law by trapping any of them. Getting rid of bats may require you to hire a professional who is licensed to do so. There are actions that you can take yourself as well, but none of these actions require or even allow you to trap these creatures. Bats are very fragile even though they may look scary when they are in flight or hanging up-side-down. Most commonly associated with vampires, bats do drink blood. But, not blood of humans! They feed on animal blood such as deer and cattle but more so on insects, to some extent, fruits and even frogs can be in their diet.

To get rid of bats, the most humane thing for you to do is to create a bat house for them. They are important for the ecosystem, devouring thousands of insects a day. Think of the number of mosquitoes and flies that would invade your surroundings if bats were out of the equation. You may think that creating a bat house is sort of trapping them into a roosting area, but no, its providing a habitat for them to live, and at the same time, ridding your home of disease carrying pathogen and spores. Bat houses are the only legal trap. Once you have completed building you bat house and installed it in a location that they can safely access, you can start using exclusion material to seal up the areas where they enter your home, preferably in the month before the winter season or the month after the winter season.
